The Who's Townshend slams 'vampire' Apple

| Pete Townshend, the legendary frontman behind British rock group The Who, attacked Apple's online iTunes service for bleeding artists "like a digital vampire". Townshend, speaking in Manchester in northwest England, called on the online giant to do more to help the artists from whom it was making so much money. "Is there really any good reason why, just because iTunes exists in the wild west Internet land of Facebook and Twitter, it can't provide some aspect of these services to the artists whose work it bleeds like a digital vampire... for its enormous commission?" he asked. Record labels and music... |
Obama Clock climbs iPhone reference app chart

| An Obama Clock app is jockeying for position with National Geographics World Atlas atop the iTunes app stores reference best-seller list, partly because conservatives are eager to monitor President Barack Obamas skidding approval numbers and shrinking calendar, says the apps designer. Liberals dont like the app because it shows Obamas numbers trending down, said Jeremy Ross, even though his app just publishes publicly available data. The app can also be used to display the same stats on future GOP presidents. Ross, a California aerospace engineer, cut his sleep time down to 5 hours per day to develop the app, which... |
[Vanity] Mac (OS X) help request

| A little tech request from fellow Mac users. I bought a bunch of blu-ray disks that each came with a digital download. All but one of them worked fine, but one of them errored out with an "err = -36" condition, which appears to be a disk read/write failure. Okay, fine, so just retry the download, right? Nope -- every time I try to re-do the download, it wants to resume where it left off, and after getting the spinning beachball o' doom for a minute or so, it fails again with the same error. Nothing I've tried seems to... |

iTunes salvation: Roman Catholic Church approves Confession app

| Are you a sinner? Don't worry, there's an app for that. The Roman Catholic Church has approved a recent iTunes addition called Confession, a $1.99 app that bills itself as "the perfect aid for every penitent." As you can see above, it lets you pick a commandment and tick off all your sins, keeping a running tally to bring into the confessional with you -- a sort of anti-tasklist, if you will. Can't find your particular misstep? No problem! You're able to add your own, custom dastardly deeds, filling in those gaps the app's authors didn't think anyone would fill.... |

| NEW YORK (Billboard) As music retailers suffer ever shrinking sales, some of the most aggressive moves to boost business are being made by the perpetual runners-up in their respective sectors. The past year has seen heightened competitive positioning between Apple's iTunes store and Amazon for digital sales and Walmart and Target for CD sales. In both instances the latter merchant is bringing the fight to their larger competitor. Amazon batters iTunes daily with pricing promotions like the Daily Deal, while Target recently used huge marketing spending to challenge Walmart's dominance in country music. AMAZON VS. | Independent artists are finally making their long, slow progress onto Apples social network for music, Ping. Ping, which launched after months of development without support from Facebook and with limited involvement of the labels, was originally castigated for offering a major label bias. This is now slowly changing, as independent aggregators including CD Baby and TuneCore step up their attempts to help their acts create Ping profiles. |
Need help with my iPod files

| Some time back, just before my lung surgery, I got a nice laptop that holds tons more data than my old desktop. So I decided to phase out the desk top and keep the niftier laptop. The main problem is my iPod, or more precisely, its files. I need to somehow tranfer the files from the iPod to the laptop, but it doesn't seem to work that way? I have installed iTunes on my laptop, but rather than transfer the contents of my iPod to the laptop, it wants to wipe it clean. I have my little iPod (Nano, 16g)... |

| One of the most popular posts I wrote in 2008 was a set of step-by-step instructions to help you do what Apple doesnt want you to do with iTunes for Windows (see Slimming down the bloated iTunes installer). Now that iTunes 10 has been released, its apparent that nothing has changed in Cupertino. Apple still gives its customers a monolithic iTunes setup program with absolutely no options to pick and choose based on your specific needs. |
Beatles and iTunes deal still at impasse: Yoko Ono

| Don't hold your breath waiting for Beatles songs to go on sale at iTunes or other online retailers, Yoko Ono said on Thursday. The Fab Four have long resisted the allure of digital downloads, instead selling millions of old-fashioned compact discs last year after remastering the catalog. Apple Corps, the group's holding company has been unable to agree on terms with EMI Group, which licenses the Beatles' recordings. And then there's the unrelated Apple Inc, owner of iTunes, the world's largest music retailer. Apple and Apple have had a difficult history over rights to the name. But that trademark dispute... |

According to my analysis of 2009 sales and market share, the top 20 U.S. music accounts accounted for 85% of the total account base. That's down from 88% in 2008 and runs counter to an almost decade-long consolidation trend under which the top 20 accounts continued to capture an ever larger share of the... |

| Four months after buying Lala Media's popular online music service for a reported $80 million, Apple is pulling the plug on the 5-year-old site. Lala notified its users in an e-mail Friday morning of the shutdown. Apple Inc. spokesman Jason Roth confirmed the plans, but he declined to say whether the Cupertino, Calif., company would resurrect the service under Apple's iTunes brand. Lala lets users listen to any song in its catalog in its entirety once for free. After that, listeners can sample the song again for 30 seconds or buy a digital download of the song for 89 cents.... |

Thanks to a recent series of federal court decisions, the digital belongings of international fliers are now open for inspection. This includes reading the saved e-mails on your laptop, scanning the address book on your iPhone or BlackBerry and closely scrutinizing your digital vacation snapshots. Unlike the more common confiscations of dangerous Evian bottles and fingernail clippers, these searches are not being done in the name of safety. The digital seizures instead are part of a disturbing trend of federal agencies... |

In a guest column on TechCrunch, Michael Robertson, a 12-year veteran of the digital music business, former CEO of MP3. com and current CEO of MP3tunes, said he believes Apple will not offer a subscription music service in the future. Instead, he said, the purchase of Lala will allow Apple to create an iTunes service that will make content accessible from anywhere. |

| Analysis: Apple Embraces The Cloud, Positions Mobile With Lala Deal December 07, 2009 - Digital and Mobile By Glenn Peoples, Nashville With its acquisition of online music start-up Lala, Apple appears to have bet on a digital music strategy that places ownership no matter how ephemeral - over subscription. And more than competing services, Lala best fits into Apple's desire for well-designed applications that complement other Apple products. The iPod wouldn't be the same without iTunes, and the iPhone should be better with Lala. Apple's interest in Lala is not surprising. Compared to other services, Lala has an iTunes-like... |

November 17th, 2009 Posted in Technology The number of times Apple and Palm went back and forth trading clever coding tactics was beginning to wear thin. At first I found myself saying yay for the little guy. But after Apple made it very clear from the get go that they werent feeling the cross platform love, Palm decided to kick it up a notch. And so began the cat and mouse game that went on for weeks. The latest Palm OS update, 1.3.1, that was released recently failed... |
